Served in the 1st Division, 16th Infantry Regiment,the Big Red One for the entire war. Landed at Omaha Beach. As a private on D-day, he directed the unloading of the raft; his section leader had been seriously wounded and he assumed leadership reorganizing the men to safety. For his heroic efforts, he received the Silver Star, the nation's second highest award.
