Served with the Corps of Engineers. He and his superior, Lieutenant Samuel I. Dunbar, comprised the S-2 Section, Headquarters and Service Company, 147th Engineer (Combat) Battalion. During the assault phase of the June 6, 1944 landings, he came ashore on Omaha Beach before H-Hour of 0630. Recommended for the Bronze Star for his liaison duties under heavy enemy fire.
