He was in the Army three years, including 18 months overseas, mostly in France. On Christmas Eve 1944, he was to have crossed the English channel into France. The boat ahead sank when hit by mines and the division was broken up. He was sent to St. Nazaire where 50,000 Germans were trapped in a pocket.
