Served as an Air Force Gunner when he was shot down over Holland, which was occupied by German forces; held as Prisoner Of War 18 months at Stalag 17B. On May 3, 1945, camp was liberated when six men of the 13th Armored Division arrived in three Jeeps and easily captured the remaining guards that numbered 205. Other units of the 13th Armored Division followed shortly and organized evacuation of Prisoners Of War by C-47 planes to France, May 9, 1945.
