Activity During WWII

Drafted and sent to North Africa and Italy. Served in I Company, 3rd Battalion, 363rd Infantry Regiment, 91st Infantry Division. Hill 634 on July 6, 1944; about 200 men walked into a German stronghold, along with L Company and were decimated. Commander withdrew them to hill 553. I Company Commander reported company strength at 20, the rest were killed, captured or missing. There were only a few left to testify about what exactly happened. Private Piller was cut off from supply team and without food, water and ammunition. Killed in action on or about July 7-8, 1944. Remains were found on August 2, 1944. Awarded medals by Congressman Nethercutt in May, 1999; Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman badge, Good Conduct medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern campaign and WWII Victory medals.
