His regiment won the Presidential Unit Citation four times. Participated in amphibious assaults on Kwajalein, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant on the battlefield at Iwo Jima, where he was later wounded and received the Purple Heart. Received the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal after an Honorable Discharge.
