Boot Camp training in Chicago, Illinois on June 18, 1944. Was assigned to a ship, the Peter Sylvester, with a cargo of mules being sent to India. Germans torpedoed the ship and it sunk. He was on a life raft for 8 days in the Indian Ocean before being rescued.
