Volunteered in 1940 and became a Naval Aviator February 2, 1942. Went to the Pacific, between Pearl Harbor and Midway battles as a Fighter Pilot. After flying cover for the islands, went to USS Hornet CV-8 as an 'Avenger' torpedo-bomber Pilot. Until Santa Cruz, he flew off USS Altamaha CVE-18 after the USS Hornet CV-8 was sunk. Served 7 1/2 years in the U.S. Navy Air Corps.
