Activity During WWII

Enlisted: Springfield, Massachusetts. Boot Camp at Parris Island, South Carolina. Assigned to Company E, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, New River, North Carolina. Transferred to Company I, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Division, North Carolina. Crossed country by rail and boarded ship in San Diego, California. Sailed directly to Pago Pago, American Samoa. Partial unloading of ship after which sailed to Wallis Island for unopposed landing. Relived in August. Sailed to Tutuila, British Samoa and after brief training period of 2 weeks continued to Guadalcanal, British Solomon Islands. Relieved January 1943. Sailed to Melbourne, Australia where he contracted malaria and jaundice, subsequently moved to convalescent camp at Adelaide, Australia. Returned to 4th General Hospital at Melbourne. Boarded USS Lurline, after a brief layover in New Zealand, sailed directly to San Diego, California. He was admitted to U.S. Naval Hospital, San Diego. Spent 2 1/2 months in the hospital. Assigned to the Guard Detachment, Provost Marshal's Office, U.S. Marine Air Air Station, Mojave, California 3 months. Admitted to base infantry due to a knee injury while overseas; it locked up and no duty was possible. He was transferred to the U.S. Naval Hospital Corona, California, had surgeries, remained there 8 months. Assigned to the Motor Transport Pool, Camp Elliot, San Diego, California. Reassigned to the 2nd Replacement Battalion, Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, California (Preparatory to second tour of overseas duty). Reassigned to the Infantry Demonstration Company; 2 days before sailing with the 2nd Replacement Battalion, combat experienced men were removed to form the demonstration company which was to provide demonstrations of methods of attack for officers training school. Assigned as demolitionist for 12 months. Transferred to Santa Margarita Hospital, Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, 2 months. Recommended for medical discharge due to internal derangement of knee. Assigned Separation Battalion, Camp Pendleton, pending discharge. Discharged on October 25, 1945, 2 months prior to completion of 4 year enlistment.
