On February 19, 1945, was sent to Iwo Jima as a 2nd Lieutenant. Was shot and badly wounded on March 16, 1945. Was with the 26th Marines, 5th Division, Company H. Was transported to Hawaii and spent several months in Naval Hospitals on the East Coast.
