Was in submarine training on USS S-28. On July 4, 1944, S-28 was diligently conducting an exercise off Pearl Harbor with the US Cutter Reliance. As S-28 dove to begin a simulated attack, Reliance lost sonar contact with her and began an intense search. The only trace of the submarine was an ominous diesel oil slick found on the surface 2 days later.
