In 1944 during a close-quarter engagement with Japanese troops on Leyte Island, Staff Sergeant Warren 'Dobber' Wenger took command of his platoon leader's men when the Lieutenant was fatally wounded. He was granted a field commission to 2nd Lieutenant.
