He was a 40mm gunner on the USS California. Was involved in 5 major battles: Philippines, Okinawa, Surigao Strait, Mindanao and Luzon Island in the Pacific and served from May 1944 to February 1946. On January 6, 1945, his ship was hit by a Japanese kamikaze plane from which he received injuries.
