Activity During WWII

Enlisted in Navy at 18 years of age. Sea duty was aboard the heavy cruiser 'Indianapolis' and seaplane tender Carson in the 1366 days of the Pacific naval war. Participated in early raids against the enemy in the Southwest Pacific and a 15 month campaign to dislodge the Japanese from American soil in the North Pacific. Served on eight major campaigns and two major air battles in the Central Pacific victory route to Japan. On V-J day, September 2, 1945, his ship was at Okinawa poised to proceed to Japan to assist in recovery of Allied prisoners and for occupation duty. Returned to the states in February 1946, assigned to shore duty until his six year enlistment expired.
