He served as a Gun Captain on Twin 40mm guns on the USS Augusta CA-31, which served as the Presidential Flag Ship. One evening, Franklin D. Roosevelt smelled food cooking in the galley and asked Officer Curns to cook him some steak and eggs and share the meal with him. Officer Curns was also present at the Normandy invasion on D-Day at Omaha Beach.
