Enlisted in 1942 and served until 1945. Was a Chief Engineer on a convoy ship which carried ammunition. In his first 30 days out his commanding officer experienced a mental breakdown; he then took calibrations and shot the sextant instrument and steered the ship out of the icebergs into safe water.
