Awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his service spotting Japanese soldiers waiting to ambush American soldiers. By opening fire, he would draw enemy fire upon himself thus alerting his Platoon of impending strike. Shot several times and wounded by a grenade; requiring 13 months of hospitalization for his recovery. Served with the 4th Division, Company G, 24th Platoon.
