Served aboard the USS Topeka CL-67. Active duty was in the Philippines and Okinawa. He was aboard the first ship to cruise into Tokyo Bay since the days of Kublai Khan. The Topeka and crew witnessed at a distance the signing of the unconditional surrender of the Japanese on September 2, 1945.
