His private vessel, The Pilot, a 38-ft charter boat, was commissioned into the U.S. Coast Guard in 1940. Patrolled the Atlantic Ocean from the Rockaways east to Smith Point. His boat was decommissioned in 1945 and returned back to him, and he re-entered civilian life. During the day, he worked at Republic Aviation in Farmingdale, New York and at the height of the war effort, he was a die maker for P-47 aircraft, the fighter of the year, and worked on Grumman Hellcats.
