Enlisted in the Navy in July 1941. Was trained as an airplane mechanic and assigned to VP 63, a submarine patrol squadron at Banana River, FL. Was transferred to North Africa with this squadron and served in French Morocco and Gibralter. Was rotated back to the states and assigned to the College of Wooster for flight training. This program was interrupted by the Japanese surrender. Was reassigned to the Pacific Theater where he served in Hawaii and Samoa.
