Activity During WWII

Enlisted March 21, 1941 in Jamaica NY, and reported for duty at Camp Upton NY. Initially assigned to Headquarters, 45th Field Artillery Battery, 8th Motorized Division Artillery, Fort Jackson SC.Next served with the 159th Regiment of the 7th Infantry Division. Participated in the Asiati-Pacific Theatre in the Aleutian Islands resulting in the recapture and occupation of the island of Attu from the Japanese on July 9, 1943.When the 159th was being returned back to the States a request was granted to remain in the Aleutians as part of Headquarters, 374th Port Battalion, Alaska Command. They initially operated on the island of Shemya, and later at Chernofski Bay, Unalaska Island.On February 14, 1945 rotated back to the States only to be returned to Unalaska Island on May 10, 1945 for the duration of the war.Discharged on October 17, 1945 at Camp Beale, CA as a TEC 4 Sergeant after 4 years, 6 months, 27 days of service, 2 years of which were in the Aleutian Islands. Received the Army Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic- Pacific Theater Campaign Medal with 1 Battle Star, World War II Victory Medal, Honorable Service Lapel Button WWII and a mustering out paycheck for $402.83.
