Served as a Deck Engineer. In July 1944, while serving aboard the Jean Nicolet, ship was torpedoed and sunk by the Japanese in the Indian Ocean. Spent two days in shark-infested waters. Among the 14 survivors rescued after being spotted by the crew of an Air Reconnaissance plane bound for Ceylon.
