Certified messenger, Citizens Defense Corps, District of Columbia, Department of Civilian Defense. As a youth, responsibility included carrying messages between Civilian Defense posts in blacked-out areas of Washington, D.C. Spent many hours learning about poisonous gases and the defenses against them, and about other air raid bombing-related topics. Eleven years old at the time.
