Stationed aboard the USS Yorktown CV-10. Served as a dive bomber pilot. Flew SP2C over Japan. Helped to sink a Japanese destroyer. Upon returning from a mission when he was landing on the Yorktown, a tail hook did not catch and the plane sunk. There is a picture of him standing on the tail of the plane as it is sinking, waving for help. He was rescued.
