Joined the Navy in 1942. Went aboard the destroyer, USS McCook. Transferred to mine squadron for 38 months, leading 12 invasion forces to the South Pacific Islands. Navy called the operation 'the most dangerous sea' duties called 'under the Southern Cross.'
