Member of the 7th Army, 399th Infantry, Company I, 100th Division. Received the Bronze Star, Combat Infantryman Badge and Sharp Shooter Medal. Company interpreter. Received Master of Arts degree, Emory University, 1941; before being drafted in June 1944 at age 29. Because he spoke German, he was used as an interpreter for the surrender of Esslingen, Germany in the 100th Division, 7th Army.
