Served on the USS Johnston DD-557. On October 25, 1944, the USS Johnston was patrolling off Samar, Philippine Islands. A large Japanese force turned and withdrew when attacked by 7 American ships. His ship was lost; he was severely burned swimming in oily flames. 186 shipmates were lost, 141 survived.
