Captain and Major with the 5th Infantry Division in England and Ireland, undergoing intensive training in preparation for the Normandy Invasion. In May 1944 became Commander of the 3rd Battalion of the 11th Infantry Division. His Battalion landed in France on July 9, 1944, a month after D-Day. He continued to command the battalion through campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennes, Central Europe and Rhineland.
