Served with the Corps of Engineers. Enlisted at Fort Belvoir, Virginia in 1941 at the age of 21. Served as a camouflage specialist in Panama, Trinidad and Tobago until returning to Fort Belvoir to attend Officer Candidate School (OCS). Graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant August 1943. Shortly after, he was sent to England. After training as a mine, countermine, demolition and barrier specialist, he was placed in command of the the 2889th Engineer Technical Intelligence Team and landed at Normandy on D-Day plus 7. Under the First Army, his team battled all the way to Germany and was stationed in Weimar when V-E Day arrived. On his own, he compiled and illustrated a booklet, 'Achtung Minen,' which detailed how to avoid all types of mines and booby traps. The 1st Army produced and distributed this booklet to every English speaking soldier in the European Theater. He was awarded the Bronze Star for Valor.
