Enlisted at the age of 21. His first destroyer was sunk in the Mediterranean Sea. He was later assigned to the USS Borie which was hit by a Japanese kamikaze several days before the war was officially ended. He was severely wounded about the face and head; lost his right eye. Received two Purple Hearts.
