U.S. NAVY. He was an armed guard for the merchant ships in the Battle of the North Atlantic; carried supplies from the United States on the Murmansk run to Russia. On one run to Murmansk, three ships were torpedoed from under him, but he was picked up in the icy waters by other ships.
