Joined the Army on June 20, 1940. Went through basic training at Fort Benning and then served with the 2nd Armored Division until June 30, 1945. Was in the Army when Pearl Harbor was bombed. Deployed overseas in December 1942 as a tank commander and participated in all WWII division battles until the end of the war. Became a tank platoon sergeant in 1943. Served in North Africa, French Morocco, and the island of Sicily.
