WAS ASSIGNED TO THE 8TH FIELD ARTILLERY OBSERVATION BATTALION AND STEPPED ONTO THE SHORES OF UTAH BEACH, NORMANDY, SIX DAYS AFTER THE D-DAY OFFENSIVE. RAY’S UNIT TRAVELED FROM UTAH BEACH TO THE ELBE RIVER IN GERMANY, THEN THE WAR ENDED. THROUGH FRANCE, BELGIUM, HOLLAND, LUXEMBOURG, AND INTO GERMANY, HIS UNIT MET THE RUSSIAN FORCES ON THE ELBE. RAY WAS AWARDED FIVE BATTLE STARS, INCLUDING SERVICE DURING THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE.
