At age 36 with three brothers already in service, he felt strongly that he should also serve. He closed his business and tried to enlist but was told he was too old. Finally, he was accepted by the U.S. Navy 'Seabees', and he spent over a year in England. In addition to his regular work during the day, he volunteered for ambulance duty at night, meeting the ships bringing in our wounded from France, because he thought he might see the brother who was serving under General Patton.
