Entered army on November 25, 1940 in Paris, Texas (132 Field Artillery, 36th Infantry Division). Commissioned 2nd Lieutenant Field Artillery, Fort Sill on June 14, 1943. Assigned to 82nd Field Artillery, 1st Cavalry Division at Ft Bliss, Texas. Served with 1st Cavalry in Southwest Pacific (1943-1945) in Admiralty Island, Leyte/Samar Campaign, Battle of Manila and Luzon in the Philippines. Landed with 1st Cavalry troopers at Yokohama while surrender terms were being signed aboard the USS Missouri.
