Enlisted in the Navy shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Had a mechanical talent for repairing things. This helped him become accepted into Aviation medalsmith School. After his graduation he went on to serve his country as a Navy Mechanic, repairing planes damaged during the war to make them combat ready again.
